The Le Ciel Award derives its name from the French word for sky. The brilliant blue accents are like the streaks of blue between clouds, providing hope for a sunnier day. A lot of people wonder why the sky is blue. Many think that it is because it reflects the ocean but the sky is blue in the countrysides nowhere near the sea. Others think it is because of the water in our atmosphere but even the driest places on Earth have blue skies covering their lands. The sky is actually blue because of the way sunlight interacts with our atmosphere. Light moves as waves of different lengths: some are short, making bluer light, and some are long, making redder light. As sunlight reaches our atmosphere, molecules in the air scatter the bluer light but let the red light pass through. John Tyndall is famous for the discovery of why the sky is blue. Though he was not French, we use the French word for sky, le ciel, to name this award because most of his books were translated into either German or French. The German word for sky did not appeal much to the award so we chose the French one instead.
